Men Who Keep Their Cell Phones On Them May Be at Risk for Infertility

A study recently published in Reproductive BioMedicine Online showed that men who keep their cell phones within 50cm of their groin were at greater risk for developing infertility.

Here are the stats:

  • 47% of men who kept their phones in their pockets recorded abnormally low levels of semen concentration. This is compared to 11% of the general male population.
  • 60.9% of men talking for more than one hour a day were infertile compared to 35.7% of men who talked less than 1 hour per day on the phone
  • Men using their phones during device charging had higher rates of abnormal semen concentration.

Researchers comment,  “our findings suggest that certain aspects of cellphone usage may bear adverse effects on sperm concentration. Investigation using large-scale studies is thus needed."

Recommendations:

  • Shorten the duration of calls
  • Do not carry devices near the groin
  • Avoid sleeping next to your phone
  • Avoid using your cell phone while it is charging or in low service area
